Come Follow Me - A Journey Through Lent

As we follow Jesus through our lives and in this time of Lent let us look at Matthew 5:13-16

We are called to be the salt of the earth.

Salt is used to enhance flavour and to preserve or slow down the decay process.

A rather interesting illustration of the kind of influence a Christian should have on the world around them. It brings some questions to mind. Am I an enhancement to those around me?

Do I make things better and slow down the decay into evil? When I am close to Jesus so His character rubs off on me, then I can share His character with those around me. Reminds me of John's Nana Barr, she was an angel without wings. You loved to be in her presence because you could so clearly see Jesus in her.

Then we are called to be the light of the world.

Without light we cant' be sure of our direction, so Jesus wants us to share the good news to those wandering in darkness. To share the light. When we have a power failure, we will use a flashlight to see the steps ahead of us and sometimes we will have to share that light with another person in the house so no one stumbles in the dark alone. Don't hide your light but shine as brightly as you can because the days are evil and so many around us are lost in the darkness.

Salt and light can add so much to this dark world. If we stay close to Jesus and reflect His light and add the influence or salt of the Holy Spirit to those around us then we will bear fruit and glorify our heavenly Father.

Come follow Jesus and spread your light and salt through the earth.
